Congratulations to all 2009-2010 Battle of the Books participants!
About 60% of all eligible Maplewood students participated. Students read from a list of books and battled at least twice. Students who did not participate were either reading the books or cheering for their classmates during lunch time battles.
Players demonstrated excellent sportsmanship, congratulating each other and shaking hands at the close of each battle. This year, participants voted to use the buzzer system. This was exciting and nerve wracking for students.
The finals were exciting with terrific teamwork and good sportsmanship.
Maplewood students are enthusiastic readers. Many good books were read and there has been spirited discussion since last fall!
The 2010 winners were:
3rd Grade, Pink Stripers
Logan, Zach, Ava, Caden
4th Grade, Great Yankees
Max, Holden, Craig, Peter
5th Grade, Fire-Breathing Devil Duckies of Doom
Molly, Miranda, Elizabeth, Elle, Molly
An update!
Battle of the Books Regional Meet
The Maplewood Skittles Battle of the Books team battled with teams from other schools in the greater Portland area on February 28 at West Orient Middle School in Gresham. Isabelle, Pauline (substituting for Sophie), Nikki , Abby ,and Hayden represented Maplewood. Their have-fun attitude, spirited team work and poise were remarkable and a fine example of what the Maplewood school community is all about! Many thanks, as well, to their parents for their support and attendance.
What is Battle of the Books?
“Overview:
The Oregon Battle of the Books is a statewide reading motivation and comprehension program sponsored by the Oregon Association of School Librarians in conjunction with a Library Services and Technology Act grant. Students, regardless of ability, are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints. The goals of the program are to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, broaden reading interests, increase reading comprehension, and promote academic excellence.
Lists of books are chosen and questions are written for elementary and middle school. Students read the books, discuss them, quiz each other on the contents, and then compete in teams of four students to correctly answer questions based on the books in a “quiz show” format. Questions may begin with the words “In which book…” so that the answer will be a title and author or it may be a content question with the title of the book supplied. Teams may participate at local, district, regional and state levels of competition.
An attempt is made to vary the titles chosen according to genre and difficulty so that readers may encounter a broad range of books.” (from the OBOB web site — http://www.oasl.info/OBOB/index.html .)
